They sit with balls of bright embroidery thread in baskets, stitching a design on local cotton or linen using cross stitch techniques, or remaking a heritage garment, painstakingly small stitches in bright colours, across the bodices, in panels for sleeves and on the hems of their skirts. Historically, the combination of motifs, colours, and style of embroidery (<em>tatreez<\/em>) on a woman\u2019s <em>thobe<\/em> linked to a very specific village and region, a personal visual ethnography now lost with displacement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-1024x509.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-1024x509.png 1024w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-768x381.png 768w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image.png 1047w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Capture from <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QC15tZuAkYI?si=QHxiW8_K75C4NNFS\">Unesco video celebrating Palestinian Tatreez<\/a> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorporating traditional motifs of Palestinian food, flora, architecture and daily life in colours that indicate both a regional identity and marital status, <em>Tatreez <\/em>has been formally recognised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/fieldoffice\/ramallah\/palestinian-embroidery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unesco on their <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/fieldoffice\/ramallah\/palestinian-embroidery\">Intangible Cultural Heritage List<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 1948 Nakba many Palestinian families were uprooted, displacing the connection traditional designs made between women&#8217;s history and their home. After the Palestinian flag was banned, the colours were embroidered onto clothing. Later, Palestinian struggle against the Occupation appeared through colours and other symbolism like doves, women literally wearing resistance and activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"962\" height=\"838\" src=\"https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-1.png 962w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-1-300x261.png 300w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-1-768x669.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Palestinian heritage garment, patched, with embroidery, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9Zkig-ktN60\">presentation at Courtauld Galleries by Rachel Dedman<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>West Bank embroiderers of <em>tatreez<\/em> are still hand-stitching fine home decor items, panels for clothing, and full <em>thobes<\/em>, for celebration or wedding garments, to market on sites like Etsy and Pinterest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethlehem, a center for design and pilgrimage since ancient times, is famous for rich and distinctive use of couch stitching, \u201c<em>tahriri<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>taqsireh<\/em>\u201d, with heavier cord secured with gold or silver thread in intricate patterns highly valued across Palestine, and now by discerning buyers online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/etsy-palestinian-thobe--1024x591.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/etsy-palestinian-thobe--1024x591.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/etsy-palestinian-thobe--300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/etsy-palestinian-thobe--768x444.jpg 768w, https:\/\/redress.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/etsy-palestinian-thobe-.jpg 1465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Exquisite embroidered thobe, possibly a Palestinian wedding dress, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/uk\/listing\/1675968028\/rentable-unique-traditional-palestinain\">for rent on Etsy<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nolcollective.com\/pages\/our-world\">Nol Collective<\/a> supports Palestinians creating modern <em>Tatreez <\/em>designs, to reach the global marketplace, including a local upcyling project &#8220;souk samara&#8221; working with vintage panels. The Collective helped preserve the traditional <em>Majdalawi <\/em>handweaving technique, traditional to the now demolished town of al Majdal in Gaza. Weavers were helped to safe premises recently, to preserve their craft.
